#CAAHoops Countdown Extra – UNCW Seahawks

With the 2013-14 CAA Women’s Hoops season about to tip this weekend, we wanted to give you the Baseline Buzz before the official bounce on the Teal and Blue – UNCW.

Head coach Adell Harris returns for her second year at the helm of UNCW. The Seahawks finished 5-26 last season, but posted a victory in the first round of the CAA Championship.

The Seahawks will be led by junior guard Kelva Atkins, who received CAA All-Tournament honors after playing all 80 minutes while compiling 18.5 ppg, 4.5 rpg and 3.5 apg during the postseason event. The starting guard averaged 10.4 points per game on the season and dished out 2.6 assists per game for UNCW. Atkins will ultimately be looked upon for leadership after leading the team in scoring six times during the 2012-13 campaign.

Senior guard Diana Venezia, who sat out last season due to injury, will also assist in mentoring as a veteran.  The Seahawks will look towards a number of newcomers and youth to step up this season with six freshmen joining the squad – Naqaiyyah Teague, Brie Mobley, Johnanna McMillan, Amber Reeves, D’Asia Cain and Ryan Flowers.

Did You Know? The Seahawks open the 2013-14 campaign on the road against #6/7 Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., on Nov. 9.


• Played in 31 games for the Seahawks earning a starting role in 17 contests, while scoring 10.4 points and dishing out 2.6 assists per game.
• Earned CAA All-Tournament team honors after playing 80 minutes straight and compiling 18.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per contest at the event.
• Tallied a career-high 24 points on 10-of-17 shooting versus George Mason in the first round of the CAA Championship.


• Suffered a season-ending injury three-minutes played of the season opener against West Virginia in 2012-13.
• Saw playing time in 16 games in 2011-12 and matched a career-high six points at Northeastern.
• Has averaged nearly five minutes per game for the Seahawks during her injury proned career.
