The University of Delaware women’s basketball team moved back into the Associated Press Top 25 Monday as the Blue Hens earned a No. 25 national ranking in the weekly media poll.
The Blue Hens (15-3, 6-0 Colonial Athletic Association), in the midst of a 10-game winning streak following a 65-56 road win at league rival Drexel Sunday, return after dropping out of the Top 25 back on Nov. 19.
However, the Hens had been earning votes in the Top 25 since then but not enough to crack the Top 25.
Delaware opened the season with a No. 11 ranking before falling to No. 17 on Nov. 12 after losses to Georgetown and Duquesne in the Pre-Season WNIT Tournament.
Baylor sits atop the poll once again with 997 points and three first place votes followed by Notre Dame, Connecticut (three first place votes), Stanford, Duke, California, Penn State, Kentucky, Tennessee, Maryland, North Carolina, Louisville, Georgia, Purdue, South Carolina, Texas A&M, Dayton, UCLA, Oklahoma State, Florida State, Oklahoma, Colorado, Iowa State, Iowa, and Delaware.
Among the teams also earning votes are Michigan, UTEP, Villanova, Texas Tech, Syracuse, Michigan State, Duquesne, Green Bay, Kansas, Nebraska , Vanderbilt, and LSU. Delaware defeated Villanova and Duquesne earlier this season.
The Hens also earned votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll last week and look to move up as well. That poll will be announced on Tuesday.
Delaware has been ranked No. 1 in the College Basketball Insider’s Mid-Major Poll since Jan. 14.
Delaware was ranked for the majority of the 2011-12 season, rising as high as No. 7 in the final AP Poll. The Hens then started the 2012-13 campaign with a No. 13 ranking, its first-ever appearance in the pre-season poll.
Senior All-American Elena Delle Donne leads the squad with 24.5 points and 9.1 rebounds per contest. Fellow seniors Lauren Carra (11.3 ppg/5.9 rpg) and Danielle Parker (9.1 ppg, 8.9 rpg) also lead the team statistically.
UD looks to continue multiple winning streaks as the Blue Hens host CAA foe Northeastern this Tuesday evening, Jan. 29, at the Bob Carpenter Center. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
