Drexel, Hofstra and Delaware stand atop the league standings with undefeated records in conference play, while Old Dominion, Northeastern and James Madison follow with just one loss. Hofstra’s Shante Evans, the Delaware Blue Hens and other teams made exciting news over the past few days. On Sunday, Hofstra’s Shante Evans became the Pride’s all-time scoring leader and currently has 1,849 career points. Evans, who entered the contest averaging a team-leading 16.8 points, is on pace to be Hofstra’s first 2,000-career point scorer. She was highlighted in today’s #CAAMinute
The league announced weekly award winners and Delaware’s Elena Delle Donne and Hollie Mershon were honored as CAA Women’s Basketball Players of the Week. James Madison’s Precious Hall was selected as the CAA Rookie of the Week. Congrats to all of the weekly honorees. For the complete release and the report, check out CAASports.com
Delaware received votes in this week’s Associated Press poll for the first time in four weeks. You can view the entire poll and the votes here and the USA Today Coaches Poll will be posted on Tuesday. Last week the Blue Hens were ranked at No. 2 in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Poll, which will be updated on Tuesday as well.
The CAA is currently ranked 14th among the nation’s 33 Division I conferences in women’s basketball according to the RPI report compiled by Collegiate Basketball News. Delaware jumped to No. 28 in the team RPI ranking. Drexel (95), Old Dominion (108), James Madison (113), Hofstra (149) and Northeastern (151) round out the CAA teams in the Top 200.
Around the League – Did You Knows…
Delaware: The Blue Hens have now extended their regular season league victory streak to 21 straight games. UD also won its 12th straight CAA regular season home contest.
Drexel: The Dragonsearned road victories over James Madison, a come-from-behind win, and UNCW last week. Drexel is now 3-0 in CAA play for the first time since 2007-08, when it opened 5-0 in league play.
George Mason: Amber Easter now ranks in five all-time Mason categories having broken into the all-time steals leaders chart — scoring, rebounding, steals, three-pointers and blocked shots. Easter is three assists away from joining the all-time assists leaders chart.
Georgia State: Kendra Long led Georgia State in scoring as she poured in 13.5 ppg and led the team with eight steals on the week. She also moved up to 2nd in GSU career history with 134 three-pointers made as she is chasing Kelcey Roegiers-Jensen’s 154 made mark.
Hofstra: Sophomore guard Andreana Thomas avearged 14.5 points per game and added nine rebounds, 16 assists and four steals for the Pride on the week, including a team-high 18 points against Mason.
James Madison: The Dukes hit 10 three-pointers against NU, which tied a season high, including eight in the second half.
UNCW: The Seahawks shot a season-best 76.9 percent (10-13) from the free-throw line against the Dragons. It marked just the second time this season that UNCW connected on more than 70 percent of their attempts from the free-throw line in a game.
Northeastern: Jewell Tunstull led NU on the week averaging 19.5 ppg and 12.5 rpg with a pair of double-doubles. She shot 58.3 percent from the floor on the week and 73.3 percent from the line for the Huskies, while adding five blocks and three steals. She hit game-tying shots with 30 seconds or less to play in regulation in both games.
Old Dominion: The Lady Monarchs have now forced 349 turnovers in 15 games this season for an average of 23.3 turnovers forced per game. Eleven of ODU’s 15 opponents have turned the ball over 20+ times.
Towson: Tanisha McTiller led the Tigers on the week averaging 17.0 points and 11.0 rebounds per outing. She has posted a double-double in four straight contests. McTiller also led the team with eight assists and six steals on the week. The junior guard is leading the team on the season pouring in 17.1 points per game to go along with team highs of 7.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists adn 2.5 steals per game.
William & Mary: Janine Aldridge has averaged 15.5 points per game on the week and grabbed a team-best 11 steals. She earned a career-high seven thefts against the Huskies on Thursday. She is averaging 13.6 ppg on the season. Aldridge is just 39 steals shy of becoming the College’s all-time leader in thefts.
