To wrap up opening day, VCU vs. William & Mary

Mar 6, 2012, 11:05 PM EDT

No. 6 VCU  (16-13) vs. No. 11 William and Mary (10-19)

When: 7:30 p.m. Thursday

A look at the Rams

Players to watch: Sr. Courtney Hurt 22 ppg, 12 rpg; Sr. Andrea Barbour 16.4 ppg

Signature win: 76-60, Hofstra (Feb. 9)

Loss to forget: George Mason, 69-59 (Feb. 26)

Last 10: 5-5

Scouting the Rams: Picked in the preseason to finish second in the league, the Rams badly wanted to return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since Hurt was a freshman. They’ll need to win it all to get there. Hurt and Barbour have led the way offensively in all but one game, but the rest of the cast has been inconsistent. Senior point guard Jennifer Lane left the team two weeks ago, and the Rams lost on Senior Day to the Patriots. They have not had an easy time with the Tribe splitting the series. They won by three win the teams met on Jan. 15 and lost by three on Feb. 16. A win likely pits the Rams against a Drexel team that has swept them this season.

Fun fact: Courtney Hurt confesses that that she loves Pokemon.

A look at the Tribe

Players to watch: Sr. Taysha Pye 14 ppg, Jr. Emily Correal 13.1 ppg, 8.7 rpg; Sr. Katherine DeHenzel 5.8 apg

Signature win: Old Dominon, 83-80 (Jan. 26)

Loss to forget: Georgia State, 74-62 (Feb. 26)

Last 10: 1-9

Scouting the Tribe: Like the Rams, the Tribe has to be disappointed with the season despite winning seven more games than they did last year, including an 83-80 victory over ODU to snap a 52-game losing streak. W&M has plenty of height and talent but struggles defensively, bringing up the rear in the CAA in field-goal percentage defense (.431). They share the ball better than any team in the league led by DeHenzel, league leader in assists. They’ve had teams on the ropes, but have been unable to finish the job. The Tribe has had success with the Rams, splitting the series. Confidence is key to surviving the first round.

Fun fact: Jazmen Boone’s pet peeve? Talking to someone with chapped lips!
